Worldcoin (WLD) token, known for its biometric data verification protocol, continues to decline in the market.

Since its launch, it has garnered much interest, but recent price movements raise doubts about its future as a solid investment option.

Currently, the price of WLD is $1.36, reflecting a 88% drop from its all-time high in March 2024 when it reached $11.8, as shown in the graph on TradingView.

This sharp decrease has pushed the token to the brink of dropping out of the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, currently ranking 97 at the time of this publication.

Expectations and Challenges for Worldcoin Token

The token’s proximity to its historical lows and its downward trend over the past year have generated mixed opinions among analysts.

Several bearish factors affect its performance, with high inflation being one of the main ones. Only 4.2% of the planned 10 billion tokens have been issued according to CoinMarketCap.

This is due to Worldcoin’s emission system, which rewards WLD to those who register on iris scanning devices called “Orbs.”

Additionally, the Worldcoin Foundation, responsible for the project, sells WLD tokens, stating that these sales are necessary to meet the growing demand from verified users and support network growth.

However, some critics, like analyst DefiSquared, view these sales as a strategy to benefit only the Foundation and early investors. He believes the project’s “predatory tokenomics” will lead to a continuous price decline if demand doesn’t offset daily sales.

Furthermore, most cryptocurrencies tend to devalue against bitcoin in the long term, and WLD seems to follow this path, casting doubts on its viability as an investment. Contrastingly, bitcoin is considered a safer investment both short and long term.

Regulatory Factors and Global Concerns

Another significant challenge for Worldcoin is the increasing regulatory scrutiny in various countries, especially in Latin America.

Last week, Mexico, through the National Institute of Transparency (INAI), initiated an investigation into Worldcoin’s handling of biometric data.

The company has been operating in Mexico since July last year, establishing its presence in at least three cities and becoming one of the main strongholds of the company in the region.

Yesterday, on September 11, Singapore opened an investigation against seven individuals accused of providing services related to the buying and selling of accounts and tokens from the project.

The project has also faced investigations and bans in countries like Colombia, Ecuador, Spain, South Korea, and Hong Kong due to concerns about invasive biometric data collection practices.

Negative publicity and regulatory criticism could severely damage Worldcoin’s reputation, decreasing investor confidence and potentially leading to a price drop.

If regulatory pressure intensifies, investors are likely to withdraw their funds, causing a mass sell-off and a price decline.

The Link between Worldcoin and AI

Despite its challenges, Worldcoin holds potential in certain aspects. Founded by Alex Blania and Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI and developer of ChatGPT AI, the project aims to identify bots and fake identities online in the AI-dominated era.

According to the developers, this technology could become a cornerstone for human identity verification, a growing trend in an AI-dominated world.

Therefore, the WLD token is closely tied to the AI sector, a trend this year and expected to continue in 2025.

Digital asset manager Grayscale highlights that the cryptocurrency and AI sectors have the potential to support each other, stating that cryptocurrency networks provide a way to decentralize and democratize access to AI.

Regarding the token price, trader BullishBanter suggests that WLD is at a crucial moment.

In the following graph, there is a general downtrend in the price of Worldcoin from late July to September.
